Bright Sunlight. Wisps of Cotton Candy. Deep fried dough smothered in melted butter and cinnamon sugar...it's time for the fair.

Our county isn't the largest in Washington, in fact it's so tiny and unknown that it is commonly mispronounced and nearly lost on the map. It's generally visited as a pit stop more than a vacation stay. Depending on where you come from I'm describing a terribly isolated and lonely spot to live, or a hidden gem, sequestered in the beautiful forests of the Pacific Northwest and enveloped within the calming waves of the Columbia River - I lean towards the latter. These are all the things that we find most alluring about the tiny island we live on, including the chance to enjoy waking up and to care for all our new batches of birds, watching as eggs hatch, chicks grow and hens dig and cluck around the yard.

This week we had the opportunity to visit the Wahkiakum County Fair. We were so pleased and excited to be able to exhibit 17 of our chickens and our kids (and my husband) really enjoyed showing off the birds they have been raising for the past few years.

Robert and his Sumatra hen Nike - Champion

Robert has been breeding his Sumatras for two years now and this is one of the daughters of his favorite hen - Athena. Sumatras are currently on the conservatory watch list, along with Phoenix and Polish, two other breeds we are partial to. We were so excited that Nike won Champion for standard breed at the fair.

Athena - our first Sumatra Hen

Our stunning Sumatra Rooster, Sigurd, won Reserve Champion for Standard Breed.

And finally, our Mille Fleur d'uccle, Rockn'Roll, cockeral won Champion for Bantams.

The Mille Fleurs are one of my personal favorites because they are so tiny, yet beautiful. Their name means "thousand flowers" because of the brights spots all over their bodies. They are very cheerful and chatty, not overly-friendly, but adorable. We enjoyed all the beautiful exhibits, including livestock, art and crafts and can't wait to come back next year!
